Bedtime Question

Jason ... My 9 year old is a deep thinker. She just asked me one question as I kissed her goodnight that the only way to answer it led to an hour conversation about life, death and God's eternal plan. Either she is REALLY smart and wants to stay up past her bedtime on a school night, or she is one spiritually sensative and contemplative little soul. I love her.

Fruit's of Dad's labors

At my Mom and Dad's tonight in Columbia, TN. Their garden's plenty makes for amazing cuisine. Mom & Dad are doing their nightly August routine, baking okra that's been rolled in corn meal. Baking is a little more healthy than frying but just as tasty. Yum. See Dad's yellow watermelon in the foreground? Seriously yum!

Sunday meetings

Had an awesome sacrament meeting today! Talk subjects were Avoiding Contention. Wow, I needed that today. I love my kids but sometimes I'd like to wack them in the head with a shovel. :)
Here are a few notes from Per Anderson's and Kari Stolworthy's talks, notes that I plan on contemplating in my quiet time this week:

Three rules:
-Do not be the cause of contention
-Do not REACT to contention
-Kill contention with love

Think twice before you speak and three times before you act.

-Contention is the tool of the adversary
-Peace is the tool of the Savior

How do we avoid contention in our lives? We show love for God by obeying His commandments and we show love for others by charitable acts of kindness.

Closing hymn: LET US OFT SPEAK KIND WORDS TO EACH OTHER (HYMN #232)

Also, today our ward mission leader (Mark Donohoo) in gospel essentials class shared a few pages from a Gordon B. Hinkley book of daily messages called "Stand A Little Taller". I think I'll get that book.

Charity begins at home. We 've all heard that phrase but today I wondered what it really means. I think it means that if we don't love with a charitable heart, those that we live with first, then how can we truly love others. If peace and contentment is not first in our homes, then how can we bring it to others. That's a lot for me to chew on, and definitely an area I want to improve in our home.

* a quick note about iPhone Scripture APPs. I had one for a while that was free. It had the standard works and a recent upgrade gave the app the topical guide. It is pretty great for FREE. However, I recently pays $14.99 for an APP called SCRIPTURES (it has the Christus statue on the APP label. This thing rocks! Standard works in it entirety, plus ALL church manuals, hymn book, conference talks, etc. etc. Well worth the money. Of course, everyone in church probably thinks I'm texting through the entire meeting. Whatcha gonna do? :)

I'd love to hear what moved you in your Sunday meetings today.

Have a great Sunday! Jason

One of my prize possessions

Who doesn't LOVE a Sunday morning??? This one is glorious in the state of Tennessee!
One of my prize possessions is this bronze of Joseph and Hyrum. My wife bought it from the artist, the same artist that did the huge bronze in front of the Nauvoo temple. She gave it to me for my birthday.

Hopkinsville, KY

Hey everybody! I FINALLY have an APP on my iphone so I can blog on the road. I'm gonna write on here lots now. :)
Wow! What an incredible week! I have so loved the opportunity over the past year of working with President Hutchings, the Tennessee Nashville Mission President. He is an awesome man with a vision for missionary work. He asked me to come and speak and sing some songs to his missionaries in zone conferences in Tennessee and Kentucky on Wednesday & Friday. What an incredible experience. I just got back into Nashville on Monday after being gone for 30 days and I had a million reasons to say "no" to attending those zone conferences, but man am I glad I listened to my instincts and said yes! It is one thing to see beauty in others, you know the skin deep kind, but to look out at those Elders and Sisters and see them as messengers of the gospel, as worthy warriors in the great battle for truth! Man, THAT is beautiful!!! I shared with them five or six of the new songs I've written for the new Nashville Tribute album and the Spirit was so present I thought we might burn up in that relief society room. It was awesome! The night before the Friday conf in Hopkinsville, KY, President Hutchings called and said he felt the Lord wanted the sisters of the mission at the conf the next day, so he asked them to clear their schedules and attend. On the 1.5 hour drive from my home to Hopkinsville, I wrote a song that I LOVE specifically for sister missionaries. I almost wrecked several times trying to write lyrics, drive and cry at the same time. Men don't multi-task, or cry. I'm such a whimp. Then, after the conference, I was saying goodbye to everybody and a senior sister came up to me and said, "Please don't forget us senior missionaries". I said, "Sure, ok, not thinking much of it". Then I got in my truck and had an unusual experience. I couldn't get that sweet senior sister out of my mind and I began to feel that our Heavenly Father has an immense love for seniors, especially those who faithfully serve Him. I was overwhelmed, really. I wrote a song especially for senior missionaries on the way home, again, crying, writing on a legal pad and trying to drive. I LOVE THE SONG! What a day! What a week. The songs are coming. The record is coming. My heart is racing. I love it! Can't wait to bring the music to your town with my buddies!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, go to www.nashvilletributeband.com and upload pictures of your missionary. It can be you, your father, your grandmother or grandfather on their missions. I need as many different pictures from different eras of elders and sisters in the field as possible for the next album cover and album art. Please take a second and upload them. YOU ARE THE BEST!
